2nd Annual Water & Waste Management in Mining Masterclass
27th – 29th February 2012, Johannesburg, South Africa

Why Water & Waste Management in Mining Now?

Water is an essential component of every mining project. Water management must be considered in every phase of mining operations from initial clearing to completion of rehabilitation. Water and its relationship with the mining industry is becoming really crucial as the sector faces many water related challenges today. In a context of growing water scarcity in Africa and multi users increasing demand, water has become a key strategic resource for the mining industry and efficient use of water through mining and metallurgical processes is still a foremost concern for many mining projects.

SALVO Global’s 2nd Annual “Water and Waste management in Mining” is a 3-day masterclass that will provide a unique opportunity to explore the recent innovations and developments related to availability and the efficient use of water in the mining industry. The course will take an applied approach, using real world examples to illustrate the fundamental concepts of managing wastewater operations, treatment of hydrocarbon-polluted water, planning for mine site closure and rehabilitation etc. In addition to the above, the course also focuses on treatment and disposal methods for solid and hazardous waste management at mine sites.

Key Course Benefits for attending Water & Waste Management in Mining:

• Monitor mine wastewater operations in periods of water shortage and water excess, and have contingency strategies in place for either eventuality.
• Address the serious issues of Acid Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) and apply innovative treatment techniques
• Discover emerging methodologies and technologies for mine wastewater treatment including desalination, reverse osmosis, brine crystallization, salt recovery and many more.
• Identify mine water pollution sources, generation and optimum control methods
• Explore how the mining industry can adapt to climate extremes, variability and change
• Understand the treatment and disposal methods for solid and hazardous waste management at mine sites.
• Renew best approaches for successful mine site closure and rehabilitation
• Understand the changing legislations and best practices for both mine water and waste management.
• Analyse the best practices of sustainability in water conservation and re-use programs
